I work for a Healthcare company, what licence do I need?

Whether you are a Pharmaceutical or Medical Device company, you will need  to identify your products using a GTIN or Global Trade Item Number.

This is required for both serialization and UDI and getting a barcode licence is the first step.

There are two barcode licences available to Healthcare companies -

  • GCP-9 Standard Barcode Licence: This licence enables up to 1,000 unique barcode numbers to be generated for products and outer cases.
  • GCP-7 Barcode Licence: This licence enables up to 100,000 unique barcode numbers to be generated for products and outer cases.
  • The annual licence fees run from January to December each year. The current year's licence fees are listed on our website.

When deciding which licence is right for your company, there are two things to consider. First, if you are using UDI or serialization software, make sure to check the system requirements before purchasing a licence as many may only work with a specific prefix length. Second, each unique product, variation, pack, outer case, etc. requires its own GTIN and the number of items you have will help to determine the licence you need.
