Will QR codes replace barcodes by 2027?
You may have heard the term Ambition (Sunrise) 2027 linked to QR codes. This date doesn’t mean that EAN/UPC barcodes will suddenly disappear from products. Instead, it reflects the point at which the retail industry aims to be ready to scan 2D barcodes at point of sale.
To make this possible, retail systems and scanners need to be upgraded so they can read QR codes powered by GS1 and make use of the additional data they contain. Manufacturers may also need to update printing and packaging processes to apply these new symbols at scale.
As with any major change, adoption won’t happen all at once. Some retailers, brands and sectors will move faster than others. For many, EAN/UPC barcodes will continue to be required, meaning there will be a transition period where both barcodes and QR codes powered by GS1 appear on pack.
This phased approach ensures continuity at checkout, while giving businesses the flexibility to explore new use cases — such as richer consumer engagement, improved traceability and better access to product information — as systems become ready.
