Will QR codes powered by GS1 replace EAN/UPC barcodes in Ireland?

EAN/UPC barcodes will continue to be used on products in Ireland and will co‑exist alongside QR codes powered by GS1 Digital Link for as long as they remain useful.

 

For many businesses, an EAN/UPC barcode is still the right solution — particularly where there’s no need to include additional data, such as batch or lot numbers, expiry dates, or links to online product information. During this transition period, both barcodes may appear on pack to ensure checkout systems continue to work smoothly while retailers and brands prepare for 2D scanning.
