Why isn't my barcode scanning?
You've scanned a barcode but aren't getting any information or you're seeing an error message. There are a few reasons this could happen.
Your isn't registered to the database
The most likely reason no information is coming up when you scan your barcodes is because the product information isn’t registered to whatever database the scanners are looking to for the information.
EAN-13 and ITF-14 barcode symbols don't contain any information except for the GTIN used to create the symbol and there is currently no central database scanners and apps can link into to pull product information.
When you start selling your products with retailers or through a distributor, they will enter their required information in their system so their scanners will have access to your product information. This will need to be done with each company you list with.
There is an issue with the symbol
If you are registered with a retailer or distributor and they are having an issue scanning your barcode, the first thing to check is if they have the correct product information, including GTIN, and that it is linked correctly.
If the information is registered correctly to the store’s database, it could be an issue with the symbol itself. There are many factors that can contribute to scanning issues including size, colour, reflectivity, etc.
Please download our Express Guide to Retail Barcodes for more information on barcode sizing and colours to ensure your symbols follow GS1 Standards.
If the your symbol follows the standards but still isn't scanning, you may need to submit it for verification testing. To have your symbol verified, you will need to send a physical sample of your barcode on the final packaging to our office, complete the Verification Application form, and submit payment for the sample(s).
