Which barcode should I use for point of sale?
Products that are intended to be scanned at a till, or point of sale, should carry an EAN-13 barcode.
If you have an Artisan (GCP-11), Standard (GCP-9), or Annual Barcode Licence (GCP-7) with GS1 Ireland, your consumer units should be assigned a GTIN-13 number which is then used to create an EAN-13 Barcode Symbol. These numbers and symbols are accepted internationally.
There are two other barcode symbols that can be used on retail units - EAN-8 and UPC-A.
The EAN-8 symbol is used to identify very small products whose size or label can't support the larger EAN-13. These are allocated directly by GS1 Ireland.
The UPC- A symbol is used in North America on retail products. GS1 Ireland members do not need UPC symbols to trade in North America as the EAN-13 and EAN-8 are accepted internationally.
You can find more information about symbol sizes and colours in our Express Guide to Retail Barcodes.
