Where should pallet labels be placed?

Where you place your pallet labels can make your product journey smoother and help you avoid mistakes and possible fines along the supply chain.

When creating your pallet label:

  • The label must include an SSCC (Serial Shipping Container Code) which is encoded in a GS1-128 barcode symbol.
  • If there is more than one barcode on the label, the SSCC should be the bottom barcode.
  • Any predefined Application Identifiers (AIs) should be listed before non-predefined fields, and both should be in numeric order base in the AI. The exception to this is the SSCC.

  • Barcode symbols must be upright in the picket fence orientation.
  • Minimum height of the bars must be 32 mm. There is no maximum height.

When placing your pallet label:

  • All labels must be placed vertically so the symbols remain upright.
  • Two identical labels should be placed on the pallet, one on the short side (if possible) and the second on the adjacent right hand side.

  • If your pallet is less than 400 mm high, the pallet labels should be placed as high as possible and the symbols, including the Quiet Zones, must be at least 50 mm from any vertical edge to avoid damage.
  • If your pallet is more than 400 mm high, the pallet labels should be placed in a space between 400 mm and 800 mm from the base of the pallet and the symbols, including the Quiet Zones, must be at least 50 mm from any vertical edge to avoid damage.
