Where should a QR code powered by GS1 go on retail packaging?

Place it where it’s easy to find and scan at checkout.

During the move to 2D barcodes, most products will include both an EAN/UPC barcode and a QR code powered by GS1. This ensures compatibility with all retail systems while upgrades continue. When multiple barcodes are on pack, placement becomes even more important. Poor positioning can lead to mis-scans or duplicate scans, which can slow down checkout.

Find the ideal spot

To support fast, accurate scanning:
  • Place the QR code on the back of pack, ideally in the lower right area
  • Keep a clear quiet zone (blank space) around the code
  • Avoid placing it too close to the edge of the pack
A well‑placed QR code helps retail staff and self‑scan systems locate and read it quickly.

Keep barcodes together

If both barcodes are used:
  • Position the QR code close to the EAN/UPC barcode
  • Keep it within close proximity so systems recognise both codes as belonging to the same product
This helps maintain fast scanning speeds at checkout and reduces errors.

Consider front‑of‑pack use

You may also choose to include a separate QR code on the front of pack for consumer engagement — such as linking to product information, promotions or accessibility content.

Mind the human‑readable text

Any human‑readable information (HRI), such as the GTIN, should be placed clearly so it can be read if a barcode cannot be scanned.
