What size should a point of sale barcode be?

EAN-13 barcode symbols, which are used for point of sale scanning, have a target size of 37.29 mm wide by 27.85 mm high.

Below you can find a table outlining the Nominal, Maximum, and Minimum sizes for the EAN-13 symbol.

The X dimension, or module width, is the width of the narrowest bar or space at 100% magnification. The width of the other bars or spaces is two, three, or four times the X dimension.

The Quiet Zone to either side of the barcode is important to maintain as it helps the scanner find and scan the symbol.

A useful device to help maintain the Quiet Zone in some production processes is to include a less than (<) and/or greater than (>) character on either side of the barcode number.

The EAN-13 barcode symbol is meant to be read omni-directionally, meaning that you can scan it from any direction and with any orientation and the scanner will read the GTIN. However, this function is highly reliant on the symbol height so it is important not to shorten, or truncate, the height of the barcode.
