What is Barcode Verification and why should I do it?

Barcode Verification is a test that analyzes the quality of your barcode symbol images and helps ensure they follow GS1 standards.

What is verification?

Barcode Verification is a testing processing that will confirm whether a barcode symbol is fully compliant with GS1 standards.

Our knowledgeable staff will use state-of-the-art verification equipment to test many factors including:

  • Colour
  • Size
  • Contrast
  • Reflectance
  • Edge Contrast
  • and many more.

Once the test are complete you will receive a written report with the results and suggestions on changes to make to meet GS1 and industry specifications.

Why Verification is important

Having your barcodes verified will offer reassurance and confidence that your barcode will scan correctly throughout the supply chain. It will reduce your risk of print re-runs which can lead to wasted packaging, time, and money. You may also be required by some of your trading partners to have your barcodes verified to ensure error-free data entry.

How to Apply

To apply for Verification, please submit the application form along with payment for the symbol types you want tested and the barcode labels in their "final retail form" together with loose labels and unformed packaging.

All new members of GS1 Ireland are entitled to 2 free verifications within the first six months of joining.

The retail labels are preferred as barcodes printed on artwork using different materials and printers from the final product run the risk of providing different test results.

Samples sent for testing will not be returned unless specifically requested and a returns label and prepaid courier ticket is included.

The application form and samples should be sent to:
