When you add a new product to Barcode Manager there are a few fields that are required before you can finalize the item. Additional data may also be needed depending on the packaging level of the product.
Required fields for all products
There are 9 required fields when you are adding a new product. These fields are mandatory for all product levels.
The first 6 fields are:
- Brand Name - the name provided by the brand owner that is intended to be recognised by the consumer, and as represented on the product.
- Product Type Description - the generic description provided by the seller to describe the type, form, or function of the product or service. Describes the use of the item/product by the consumer i.e. what the customer would call the product, e.g. "salad dressing", "soup", "jam" etc.
- Net Content - Net Content is defined as the quantity (or quantities) of consumable product contained in the package, typically printed on the label for the country or market where the product is sold, which may include: net weight, volume, count, units, etc.
- Net Content Measurement Unit - Unit of Measure of the trade item Net Content
- Product Description - An understandable, unique and useable description of the trade item. This description will also be used to identify the product on the "My Products" page in Barcode Manager.
- GS1 Global Product Classification (GPC) Brick Code - Global Product Classification is a system for describing, classifying and coding products and is used by trading partner and retailers to group and identify types of products. The "GPC Brick Code" is an 8-digit number starting with 1 that can be found by either typing your product's functional name, such as "bread", into the field, or by using the GPC browser to search.
These 6 fields are located in the top section of the page and are noted with an asterisk in front of the field name.
If you don't fill in these fields, an error will appear on screen when you try to create the GTIN (barcode number). Each box will need to be filled in by you, with the only exception being the Product Description. For the description you can click the "Auto-fill" box to the right and it will fill in the information provided in the fields that came before it.
The other 3 required fields are:
- Country of Manufacture
- Countries of Sale
- Trade Item Data Language
These 3 boxes are prefilled with Ireland, Ireland, and English respectively, but you can update them to the correct information if it is different to what is auto-populated.
Weights for Dispatch Units
If you have marked your product as a Dispatch Unit in the Options section, you must provide the Gross and Net Weight information in the Weights section.
To enter the weight information, first choose the unit from the drop down menu on the right side and then enter a numeric value into the left field.
Contained Items
For any products entered above the Consumer Unit level, you will need to provide the number of items of the product(s) that are going in the Pack, Case, or Display Unit.
If you can't add the product, make sure to check for any errors highlighted throughout the page. You can also check out our article Why won't Barcode Manager let me create a new product? if you aren't sure what the issue is.
